The Mayo clinic diet?
Since the 1950ies there have been several diet programs that
had the name “Mayo” in them. Common for these where the promise
of quick results and little work to get there, often being mono
diets where you can eat only apples, grape fruits or something
else.
Those kinds of diets are what we call fad diets, and are nothing
more than one big hoax! Sure, they might provide you with some
weightloss in the beginning, but often, the weight that is lost
is only water or muscle, while the fat stays on, and once you
grow tired of eating nothing but apples or grape fruits, you
crash big time and may end up having gained nothing but extra
padding and low motivation.
None of the so called “mayo” diets have been developed nor
endorsed by the mayo clinic and should be treated as nothing but
hot air rumours, riding on the good name of the mayo clinic.
So
what is the mayo clinic diet?
There really isn’t any specific mayo clinic diet, which
specifically target weight loss. But there is a set of healthy
living rules, which will result in better overall health and in
weight loss if you are overweight.
These rules are set up in the mayo clinic book “Mayo clinic
healthy weight for everybody”, and are the result of years
of research and improvement. The combination of a calorie level
pyramid with unlimited allowance of fruits and vegetables built
upon a base of regular exercise and daily activity, have proven
to reduce weight and maintain a healthy weight as well as reduce
the risk of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes along
with other lifestyle related health problems.
So
the answer is No, there is not a mayo clinic diet! But
there is a mayo clinic guide to healthy living and life style
reorganizer.
Summery of what the mayo clinic dictates.
The mayo clinic long term healthy living plan is based on
unlimited amounts of fruits and vegetables, based on a core of
regular exercise and physical activity.
One of the strengths of the healthy living plan is that there
really are no foods that are not allowed. You can actually eat
whatever you like, as long as you stay within you daily calorie
level within the different foods groupings.
The pyramid works in calories and servings terms. The serving
terms have different definitions depending of the type of food.
Normally the serving definition for the specific kind of food
and can read on the food declaration.
I.e. the Mayo clinic pyramid allows for 75 calories of sweets
per day, 3 to 5 servings of fats, 3 to 7 servings of dairy and
protein rich foods (meat) 4 to 8 servings of carbohydrates, and
unlimited amounts of fruits and vegetables.
From this pyramid, you kind create countless menus on you own or
you can choose to begin with some of the menus that the mayo
clinic has published on their web site and in their book.
